What is a flaky scalp?
The most common cause of a flaky scalp is dandruff, this is essentially a build up of dead skin cells on your scalp. It can be triggered by the change in weather, stress and the use of wrong products. However, sometimes it can be due to not washing your hair enough!
How to prevent a flaky scalp?
- Shampoo your hair regularly (daily is ideal) to remove dead skin cells.
- Dairy foods (especially cheese) can worsen dandruff so be wary of how much you are eating.
- Try to stress less, this can aggravate your scalp.
- Avoid using oil-based products. Contrary to belief, dandruff creates an oily scalp, not a dry one, so by applying oil-based products you will just make your flakes greasier.
What products can I use to help remove flakes and itching?
Use an anti-dandruff shampoo frequently, I recommend Philip Kingsley’s flaky/itchy scalp shampoo. A weekly exfoliating scalp mask can also be used for more severe cases.
If the steps above do not help, you may have a more serious scalp condition, or which I’d recommend seeing your GP or Hair and Scalp Specialist.
